Gender identity is complex and impossible to limit to binary understandings of female and male. Every human being, as a result of having been created in the image of God, reflects the Divine image in every aspect of life, including gender, but just as none of God's beloved children is exactly like another one, so gender identity is unique to each individual. Mental health professionals now encourage that gender identity be viewed on a scale in the same way that sexual identity is viewed (per the research of Alfred Kinsey). As those called to be good stewards of all that God has made and to live with the love and justice embodied in Jesus, the Christ, we must respect the diversity of God's good creation and honor each person as God's beloved child. |
